Brazil and Tanzania established diplomatic relations in 1970. The Embassy of Brazil in Dar es Salaam was opened in 1979; closed for some years, it was reopened in 2005. Tanzania established its Embassy in Brasília in 2007. Both countries have cooperation projects in areas such as livestock, horticulture, and fight against HIV/AIDS.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was the first Brazilian Chief of State to visit Tanzania, in 2010. On the occasion, a partnership in the area of fight against deforestation was established. In retribution, within less than two years, Foreign Minister Bernard Membe (2010), Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda (2011), and President Jakaya Kikwete, in the context of the Meeting of the Open Government Partnership (2012), visited Brazil.
